In the early years, Sun State Refrigeration was born from a vision to serve the Phoenix, Arizona community with reliable air conditioning and refrigeration repair services, and it has been a steadfast presence since its inception in 1979.

Founded by Mark Gresin, a proud Phoenix native and veteran, our company has remained dedicated to delivering exceptional residential air conditioning, heating repair, and refrigeration services to both households and commercial establishments.

Mark’s family history, shaped by immigration during the tumultuous era of World War II, laid the groundwork for Sun State Refrigeration’s enduring commitment to resilience and excellence. With his father originating from Latvia and his mother from Rome, Italy, their journey to the United States embodied hope and perseverance.

During the 1930s, our parents faced significant challenges, including the devastating impact of the Great Depression. Like many families during that period, our parents lost pretty much everything they had built and owned before that awful economic time. Afterwards, our entrepreneurial family, consisting of my father and grandparents, left their home in Harrisburg, PA circa 1930 and headed West until they came to a small town known as ‘the Valley of the Sun,’ which was, of course, Phoenix, Arizona.

At that time, Phoenix, Arizona had a population of around 50,000 (total), but it was a fast-growing city, almost doubling its population through the 1920s. Phoenix was a place where anyone with a dream and some drive could stake their claim to the American Dream, especially if they could stand the heat, which made it a perfect future candidate for Sun State Refrigeration!

Following their arrival in Phoenix, our family embarked on a new venture, establishing Gross’ Delicatessen. This became a thriving establishment, renowned for its delectable offerings and inviting ambiance, and flourished from the early 1930s until the early 1980s, becoming a beloved community hub before Mark’s parents retired.

Moving forward a few years, Sun State Refrigeration is not just surviving; it’s thriving! Bob Dylan’s timeless words, “The times they are a-changin’,” perfectly encapsulate our journey into what is now the digital age. Founded in 1979, in an era devoid of the Internet and mobile technology, Sun State Refrigeration has witnessed firsthand the monumental shifts in technology. From the days when computers were the size of large rooms, we’ve come a long way.

Today, Sun State Refrigeration has evolved into Sun State HVAC to reflect the advancements in technology, especially in the realm of the Internet and digital age. While our name has changed, we proudly continue our legacy of excellence and community involvement that Sun State Refrigeration has always upheld. As owner/operators and founders, we remain firmly rooted in the values we always have.
